Workshop well on its way.
On 25 October the 53 participants started the workshop on REACH impact assessments. The participants are from 23 member states, the European Committee, the European Parliament and the Council Secretariat.

What is REACH?

REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals) is a proposal to arrive at better legislation for dealing with chemicals in the European context. REACH should help to make it possible to identify the most hazardous chemicals and to gradually reduce their production. The new rules are intended to guarantee the health of both mankind and the environment. However, Europe also wants to ensure that the European market continues to function efficiently and that the innovative and competitive capacity of the chemical industry remains intact.

Before laws can be passed, studies have to be carried out to discover the impact the implementation of REACH will have: on the environment, people's health and on business in Europe.

I would like to ask the delegates in the REACH workshop to be creative in their solutions for cost reduction. It is essential for political support…”
